Few things are as frustrating as a game that stutters right when you need to jump, or a car that keeps freezing mid-race. The good news is that lag in browser games usually has a simple cause and an easy fix. Browser games run on your own phone or computer, so a few settings can make a big difference. This guide explains why games lag and gives fourteen fixes, starting with the ones that help most often. If a game does not start at all, read our guide on what to do when a game will not load instead.

What causes lag in browser games?

An HTML5 game draws a new picture, called a frame, many times per second. Smooth games show around 60 frames per second. Lag happens when your device cannot draw frames fast enough, or when it pauses now and then to do something else. The most common reasons are:

  • The browser is not using your graphics chip (hardware acceleration is off).
  • Your device is in a power saving mode that limits performance.
  • Many tabs, apps or extensions are using memory and processing power.
  • The device is hot and slowing itself down to cool off.
  • The browser is old or has a cluttered cache.

Internet speed is rarely the cause once a game has loaded. Most single player browser games download everything at the start and then run entirely on your device.

Quick fixes to try first

1. Close other tabs and apps

Every open tab uses memory, and some, such as video sites and social feeds, keep working in the background. Close the tabs you do not need, and on a phone close other apps from the app switcher. This one step fixes a surprising number of lag problems.

2. Plug in and turn off battery saver

Laptops and phones slow themselves down to save battery. On a Windows laptop, plug in the charger and choose a balanced or best performance power mode. On a Mac laptop, check whether Low Power Mode is on in the battery settings. On Android, switch off Battery Saver, and on iPhone, switch off Low Power Mode in Settings, Battery.

3. Reload the game

If a game ran smoothly and then became slow, simply reloading the page often helps. Long sessions can leave a game using more memory than it should, and a fresh start clears it.

4. Use full screen mode

Press the full screen button on the game page. It hides other parts of the page, so the browser has less to draw, and it also helps you focus. On a slower computer, a smaller window can actually be smoother, so try both.

Browser settings

5. Turn on hardware acceleration

This is the single most important setting for 3D and animated games. It lets the browser use your graphics chip to draw the game.

  • Chrome: Settings, System, then switch on "Use graphics acceleration when available" and relaunch.
  • Edge: Settings, System and performance, then switch on "Use graphics acceleration when available".
  • Firefox: Settings, General, Performance. Tick "Use recommended performance settings", or untick it and make sure hardware acceleration is on.

In Chrome and Edge you can check whether graphics acceleration is working by typing chrome://gpu or edge://gpu in the address bar. Most features should say "Hardware accelerated".

If hardware acceleration is on but a 3D game still runs at a crawl, updating your graphics drivers on a Windows PC often helps. Download them from your computer maker's or graphics chip maker's website.

6. Update your browser

Browsers get faster with almost every update, and updates fix graphics bugs that can cause stutter. In Chrome and Edge, open the menu, then Help and About to check for updates. On phones, update the browser from the Play Store or App Store, and keep iOS up to date on iPhone because Safari updates come with it.

7. Disable heavy extensions

Some browser extensions inspect every page you visit and can slow games down. Try playing in a private or incognito window, where most extensions are switched off. If the game runs better there, disable your extensions one by one to find the culprit.

8. Clear the browser cache

A very old or damaged cache occasionally causes games to behave strangely. Clearing cached images and files in your browser's privacy settings is safe and will not delete your passwords if you leave those options unticked. Note that clearing site data can also reset saved progress in some games.

9. Try another browser

If a particular game lags in one browser, try another. On a computer, Chrome, Edge and Firefox are all good choices. On iPhone, every browser uses Safari's engine, so switching makes less difference there.

Device fixes

10. Let your device cool down

Phones and laptops slow themselves down when they get hot. If a game starts smooth and gets worse after ten or fifteen minutes, heat is the likely reason. Remove a thick phone case, keep the laptop on a hard surface so its fans can breathe, avoid playing while charging in direct sunlight, and take short breaks.

11. Restart your device

A restart clears memory, stops stuck background apps and often solves lag that nothing else fixes. If your phone or computer has been running for days, restart it before a long gaming session.

12. Free up storage on your phone

When a phone is almost full, it has less room for temporary files and can slow down in general. Deleting old videos and unused apps to keep some free space can make the whole phone, including games, feel faster.

13. Lower the game's own settings

Some games have a settings menu with graphics quality, shadows or effects. Choosing a lower setting can turn a stuttering 3D game into a smooth one, especially on older phones and laptops.

14. Check your connection for online games

If you are playing an online or multiplayer game, a weak connection causes a different kind of lag: other players jump around or your actions arrive late. Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, avoid big downloads on the same network while playing, or switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data to see which is steadier.

Laptop and PC extras

Choose the right graphics chip on Windows

Many laptops have two graphics chips: a power-saving one built into the processor and a faster separate one. Windows sometimes runs the browser on the slower chip. To change it on Windows 10 or 11, open Settings, System, Display, Graphics, find your browser in the list (add it if it is not there), choose Options and select High performance. Restart the browser afterwards.

Check the refresh rate

If you have a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor, make sure Windows or macOS is actually using it. In Windows, open Settings, System, Display, Advanced display and choose the highest refresh rate. A higher refresh rate makes fast games look much smoother.

Keep the system tidy

Background programs such as large downloads, cloud backups starting up, or a virus scan can make games stutter. If lag appears suddenly, open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) or Activity Monitor on Mac to see what is using the processor, and pause it while you play.

How to find the cause in two minutes

If you are not sure where to start, these quick tests point to the right fix:

  1. Try a simple 2D game. If simple games are smooth but 3D games lag, the graphics settings (fix 5 and the Windows graphics chip setting) are the likely cause.
  2. Try a private window. If the game runs better there, an extension is slowing it down (fix 7).
  3. Plug in the charger. If the game suddenly runs better, power saving was the problem (fix 2).
  4. Play for 15 minutes. If the game starts smooth and slowly gets worse, heat or memory is the cause (fixes 3, 10 and 11).
  5. Try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If an online game lags on every device, the connection is the problem (fix 14).

Phone-specific tips

Android
  • Turn off Battery Saver while playing
  • Update Chrome from the Play Store
  • Close apps from the recent apps screen
  • Some phones have a Game Mode or game booster: it can help
iPhone and iPad
  • Turn off Low Power Mode
  • Keep iOS updated for the latest Safari
  • Close other apps if the phone is older
  • Remove a thick case if the phone gets hot

You can also install Pikashowsgames like an app: open the menu in your browser and choose "Install app" or "Add to Home screen". The site then opens in its own window without the browser's address bar, giving games a little more space.

Still lagging?

Very old devices may struggle with the newest 3D games even after every fix. In that case, try lighter 2D games, which run well on almost anything, such as Core Ball, Neon Wave Dash or Chess. If one particular game lags badly while others run smoothly, please contact us and tell us the game name, your device and your browser. It helps us find and fix problems for everyone.

The 60 second checklist

Close other tabs, plug in your device, switch off battery saver, turn on hardware acceleration, reload the game and go full screen. These six steps fix most lag problems in under a minute.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a browser game lag on my computer but not my friend's?

Usually because of differences in settings rather than hardware: hardware acceleration may be off, the laptop may be on battery saver, or many tabs and extensions may be running. Try the checklist in this guide before assuming your device is too slow.

Does internet speed affect browser game lag?

For most single player HTML5 games, the internet only matters while the game is loading. Once it has loaded, the game runs on your device. Lag during play is usually caused by the device, not the connection. Online multiplayer games are the exception.

Should hardware acceleration be on or off for games?

On. Hardware acceleration lets the browser use your graphics chip to draw the game, which is much faster for 3D and animated games. Only turn it off if a specific game shows graphics glitches.

Why do games run slower when my phone is on low battery?

Battery saver modes on Android and Low Power Mode on iPhone reduce performance to save energy. Games can become noticeably slower or less smooth. Charge your phone or turn the mode off while playing.

Is lag the same as a game not loading?

No. Lag means the game runs but stutters or feels slow. If a game does not start at all or shows a black screen, follow our separate guide to fixing games that will not load.
